What to see in Schwerin
Schwerin (in German, Schwerin, pronounced/ʃveˈʁiːn/(listening)) is a German city, capital of Misklemburg-Western Pomerania. It is located 80 km south of the Baltic Sea. It is the second largest city (after Rostock) and one of the four most important economic centers in the federated state. It has about 96,000 inhabitants and that is why it is the smallest capital of the federated states of Germany.
The German city was founded by Duke Saxon Enrique el León in 1160. With the passage of time the city was extended west and south of the Schweriner Innensee lake. Today there are twelve lakes in the city area. Already in the middle of the 10th century a commercial traveler reported a castle in a freshwater lake, a predecessor of Schwerin's castle, which was until 1918 the main residence of the Dukes and the Grand Dukes of Mecklemburg. Since 1990 the castle is the headquarters of the Regional Parliament (Landtag) of the federated State.
The Schwerin Palace is located on an island in the middle of the lake of the same name, and is the main milestone of the city. Previously the Dukes and Great Dukes of Mecklenburg reigned in this building. Nowadays it is the headquarters of the regional Parliament of Misklemburg-Western Pomerania.
